Fun With Flowers

Let Your Colors Show!

MATERIALS:

Clear plastic dessert plate (6”0
Clear oasis tape
Cube of colored Oasis (4’x4”), soaked
3 Stems purple Liatris
7-9 small round flower forms (sample uses yellow daisies)
2 full round forms (sample uses 2 small white carnations)
3 leaflets of leatherleaf fern

DIRECTIONS:

-Cut a 4” cube of pre-soaked Oasis, (your choice of many colors made by Oasis) and secure it with clear Oasis tape to a 6’ clear plastic dessert plate.

-Insert an 18” stem of Liatris into Oasis in the center of the left third of the cube. It could be helpful to lightly mark the top of the Oasis cube in thirds.

-Insert second Liatris (14” tall) directly in front of first piece; insert third piece 8” tall, directly in front of first two pieces.  This forms a strong line with Liatris flowers from top to bottom.

-Insert 12” stem of daisy or other round form flower, to the center right of the middle third of the cube (almost into the next third); place rest of flowers in same line, varying the distances between flowers (see photos for placement);  use extra flowers to finish the back of the line formed…staying in line.

-Insert very short-stemmed carnations or other round form flower(s) in center of last third of cube, one exactly behind the other.  Add one or two leaflets of fern.

NOTE:
If clear Oasis tape holding cube to plate is distracting, cover it with a few strands of moss or fern leaflets.  No need to tape at all if design isn’t going to be transported/moved.

Remember that the idea here is simplicity and showing off the lines of flowers you are using.  This is a restrained design with impact.  Try different color combinations; your first line could  be reeds, stems, snake plant, Podocarpus, Delphenium or Gladiola.  Your other flowers might be daisies, carnations, roses, etc.

Try some of the new-to-the-market colored metallic wires, loosely coiled around that first strong line…have fun…play with this idea design!
