The
late FFGC former President, Van Blanchard designed the Bartram Trail
Markers which have been placed all over the Deep South to mark the
routes that botanist William Bartram traveled. William Bartram, son of
naturalist, John Bartram, described the routes he covered in Bartram's
Travels which was published in 1791. This book is recognized as one of
the most important American literary, scientific
books of that century.
The markers may be placed within the fifty mile wide corridor along the
path of Bartram's travels described in the book. There are 25 markers
in Florida, the most recent being in Mead Garden adjacent to FFGC
Headquarters. Garden Clubs which are within the corridor, in Districts
I, IV, V and VI are encouraged to place a marker in an appropriate site.
These markers designate the sites mentioned in the Travels and serve to
create an awareness and appreciation for the noted artist, naturalist
and explorer. The price is $940.00 for the marker which is cast
in Ohio by the same company that makes the Blue Star Markers.
This chairman will provide dates, request forms, and/or information for
club programs.
