Water remains essential for life. Competition for water creates
conflicts within our state. We must conserve and protect the
limited amount of groundwater that has not already been allocated
through consumptive use permits. Alternative sources of
water will have to be developed to meet our growing need for
public water supply and to protect our remaining
sources of groundwater. Members of FFGC can encourage our
decision makers to develop alternative sources of water.
Although Florida is renowned for its wetlands, its enormous
population gowth in the last half of the 20th century has caused
widespread degradation to thousands of square miles of those
wetlands. These wetlands serve as aquifer recharge areas by
collecting rainwater and agricultural runoff. The
vegetation and natural minerals in the wetlands filter out many
of the nitrates, phosphorus and other contaminates.
We must hold our decision makers accountable to protect the
wetlands and to respect their value. In keeping
with the goals of this administration, we must continue to educate our
members and the public regarding important issues
surrounding water. Carry forward our policy of District
Water Conferences to our local clubs or groups of clubs.
