WOOD PATHS OF SUNSHINE AWARD
PURPOSE:
To recognize organizations, who through special effort and pride in
their work, promote the conservation, restoration, management, and
dispersal of native plants and wildflowers on Florida’s public
roadsides. To honor the life and work of Ella P. Wood, Florida
Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc (FFGC). president, 1979-1981.
BACKGROUND:
The Paths of Sunshine Awards Program was launched in 1985 to give
recognition for outstanding efforts exhibited by FDOT highway
maintenance units and Garden Clubs responsible for either the planting,
or care of, roadside areas containing native plants and/or wildflowers.
All Florida residents and visitors are eligible to submit nominations.
A committee of judges will be designated by the FFGC Roadside
Beautification Chairman. Awards are presented at the FFGC Annual
Convention following the nomination and judging. Selection is based
upon how effectively the nominees have fulfilled the objectives of the
Paths of Sunshine Awards program and the Federal Highway Beautification
Act of 1965.

NOMINATIONS:
Nominations for this award may be submitted by anyone. The deadline for
submitting is September of each year, which gives the persons
responsible for the planting time to prepare documentation. The
documentation is due December 31st of each year. The FFGC Roadside
Beautification Chairman will notify the nominees. For nominees on the
state highway system this chairman will notify the State Transportation
Landscape Architect. FDOT nominations will be administered to
meet the
requirements of the FDOT Wildflower Program Procedure. This chairman
will notify FFGC District Directors when a section of their District
has been nominated.
DOCUMENTATION:
Documentation may be in any format. Creativity is encouraged. The
documentation should include the following:
1. Photographs of the wildflower or native
plant areas, and/or efforts of personnel.
the cover should be submitted in a
81/2” x 11” theme binder and should identify the roadway,
including
apropos information such as: FFGC District,
State Road or County Road number, local
roadway, name
start and end point of project, FFGC District, Maintenance Unit, local
government, or
private contractor.
2. A map of the highway system for which the nominee
is responsible with areas being considered for an award marked, or
otherwise
identified.
3. A narrative of the nominee’s goals and
accomplishments, supported by color photographs.
4. A narrative of all work and activities related to
planting and management of wildflowers and/or native plants along the
roadside.
5. Name, address, phone number, e-mail address, if
available, of person submitting the documentation.
Documentation and images in documentation become the property of the
FFGC and may be used to promote the award program, and to promote the
establishment, retention, and enhancement of native plants and
wildflowers on Florida’s public roadsides.
JUDGING CRITERIA
The preservation or conservation of native plants and/or wildflowers
growing on rights of way.
Roadside management that promotes flowering, seed set, and nature
l
regeneration and dispersal of established native plants and/ or
wildflowers.
Collection, preparation, and planting of native seeds and plants.
Management of native plants and habitats within the rights of way.
Efficient use of available resources.
Abiding by the spirit of the Federal Highway Beautification act of
1965. Title 23, chapter 3, Section 319 Code of Federal Regulation which
promotes highways that blend with our natural, social, and cultural
environment, but also provide pleasure and satisfaction in their use.
The judging committee is selected by the FFGC.
AWARDS
FFGC will notify all award finalists and schedule the ceremony.
Awards will be determined by the FFGC. Each of the finalists shall
receive a framed certificate provided by the FFGC.
If the first place winner is from the FDOT the winner’s name will be
engraved on a plaque and on permanent display at FDOT headquarters in
Tallahassee.

| During
the
January 2008 of the FFGC BOD Meeting, A butterfly bench was
dedication in honor of Ella Wood, FFGC President from 1979-1981.
This beautiful bench was given to the Federation by John
Wood, who sponsors the Paths of Sunshine Awards in honor of his late
wife Ella. Present for the dedication was Addie Lou Harris,
Headquarters and Endowment Chairman and past FFGC President and
Elizabeth Pate, Paths of Sunshine Chairman, John Wood, his son John and
FFGC President Cinny O'Donnell.
Throughout the years Mr. Wood has also given considerable money to
FFGC. While sponsoring these awards yearly, he has
also given a scholarship for Butterfly Study. This beautiful
butterfly bench will be placed in a special garden area at FFGC
Headquarters and will be dedicated to Ella |

When
it’s
time for you to
renew your license plate please remember to purchase the Wildflower
License Plate. Proceeds from the sales of the plate are
used for
planting, educational and research grants and over a million dollars
has been
received from the sale of the plate so far. This has enabled the
Florida Wildflower Foundation (FWF) to award over $314,532 in
grants to garden clubs, cities, and universities who have applied for
grants.
You are able to buy a Coreopsis license plate at any license tag
office. You can have a six-letter message on it . So, get creative or
just ask for the Wildflower plate and they will be glad to sell it to
you. The cost of the license plate is an additional $15.00, the FWF
receives $15.00 and it is put to good use. As of June 30, 2010 there
have been 157,117 Wildflower plates sold with an
estimated revenue of $2,356,755.00. This has enabled the Florida
Wildflower Foundation (FWF) to award a total of $314,532.00 to garden
clubs, cities, and universities. The FWF also participates in
the PATHS OF SUNSHINE awards yearly, equaling the amount given to the
winners by the Ella P Wood PATHS OF SUNSHINE program.
