Book Description
Gardens and Historic Plants of the Antebellum South is a beautifully illustrated volume that features botanical prints, lithographs, garden plans, historic photographs, and contemporary photography to reveal the rich garden history of the South. A pictorial splendor as well as a treasure trove of cultural history, this volume is unique in its field. James R. Cothran invites plant enthusiasts, gardeners, and individuals interested in the history of the South to experience the glorious gardens that flourished in the region from 1820 through 1860. During this period of enormous wealth, prosperous southerners built stately houses and established high-style gardens in towns and cities, as well as on plantations. The South's mild climate, long growing season, fertile soil, and traditional ties to the land fostered an abiding interest in gardening that encompassed the region.

Cothran's research included travel throughout the South to examine a multitude of historical sources—diaries, letters, travel accounts, garden plans, maps, paintings, photographs, nursery catalogs, garden books, and agricultural journals. In the resulting volume he describes the distinguishing features of antebellum gardens, sources for seed and plants, and dissemination of gardening information and fashion. Cothran also identifies landscape plans executed and plants cultivated during the golden age of horticulture in the South. Of particular interest to contemporary gardeners is an extensive list of ornamentals—American natives, European favorites, and a wide selection of newly introduced exotics from China and Japan—that were hallmarks of antebellum gardens and that remain mainstays of southern gardens today. In addition, Cothran provides profiles of prominent gardeners, horticulturists, nurserymen, and writers who, in the decades preceding the American Civil War, were instrumental in shaping the horticultural and gardening legacy of the South

Editorial Review
With its colorful coral reefs, excellent birding, and tropical temperatures,
Florida remains a popular vacation spot for the ecologically minded. In this concisely detailed volume you'll become acquainted with the state's geologic origins, natural history, and diverse habitats (salt marshes, mangrove swamps, prairies, and woodlands). A field guide assists in the identification of some of the region's wildflowers, trees, fishes, amphibians, reptiles, butterflies, mammals, and birds, including the elusive manatee, three species of dolphin, and the rare snail kite. An extensive sampling of the area's best parks, preserves, beaches, forests, islands, and wildlife sanctuaries, with thorough descriptions and visitor information on 50 destinations, is also included. For instance, the section on Everglades National Park includes information on wildlife viewing possibilities, driving directions, and popular touring attractions inside the park (such as Shark Valley, where a 15-mile loop via foot, rental bike, or tram affords close views of alligators, anhingas, and wading birds). Lesser-known areas such as Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge and Withlacoochee State Forest are also featured. More than 1,300 color photographs heighten the quality of this handy compilation

Editorial Reviews
From the Publisher
First published in the 1940s as My Garden in Florida, these two newly revised and edited volumes by Henry Nehrling (1853-1929) present a remarkable record of Florida's botanical history and a delightful mixture of observations on the central and south Florida climate and growing conditions. His association with writers, scientists, and travelers presents a window into the gardening community of his era, and his intriguing mixture of subjects furnishes an important source of information for those interested in Florida's social, botanical, and environmental history.
A noted au
thority on tropical and subtropical plant lore, Nehrling wrote with passion in a style rich in detail and free from technical jargon, and his plant descriptions and horticultural information are as valuable today as when first written.
In his gardens at Gotha near Orlando and at Naples (now Caribbean Gardens), Nehrling introduced into cultivation and popularized many plant species that have since become common in Florida landscapes. His articles provide invaluable first-hand accounts of the environment in his time, descriptions of natural conditions, and observations of areas no longer undisturbed. More than history, however, these books describe the beautiful tropical and subtropical flora that make Florida the Garden of Eden as we know it today.

Nehrling's Early Florida Gardens describes his arrival in Floria, Florida's climate and soils, the planting of his first garden and his mistakes and failures, the flatwoods, the hammocks, epiphytes, bamboos, magnolias, live oaks, Japanese and Chinese evergreens, the camphor tree, conifers, the myrtle family, oleanders, cycads, bromeliads, air plants, orchids, shade trees and flowering trees, fig trees, sacred trees, vines and swwet-scented plants, flowering shrubs, oleasters, annuals, perennials, and bulbs

Editorial Reviews - Book Description
Residential and commercial landscapes are loaded with male-only trees and shrubs since they are litter- and therefore maintenance-free. But given a choice, what would you rather do—sweep or battle hay fever? The fact that our urban forests have been propagated with male-clones is a crime on two counts: male plants are the pollen-producing offenders, and without female plants to absorb pollen, allergenic pollen counts are on the rise nationwide. In SAFE SEX IN THE GARDEN, horticulturist Thomas Leo Ogren explores this safe sex issue (plant sex, that is!), as well as many other allergy-related topics: organic gardening, protecting pets against allergies, handling allergy-related stress, and global warming’s affect on allergies.

Editorial Reviews From Booklist Ages 6-8. Here's a pretty gathering of folk tales about flowers. Each flower tale is only page or two long, very compressed but still recognizable in the telling. The tales range from a Sicilian story of a crocus sprung from a poor boy's kindness, to a tale in which the prophet Mohammed's linen shirt turns a common mallow plant into a bright and scented geranium. Dillard's dry and rather formal gouache style works better for the flower images, clear and botanically correct, than for the figures. A bibliography (of adult research titles) is appended. From Library Journal
A professor of horticulture and the author of ten books, including the well-known Manual of Woody Landscape Plants, Dirr (Univ. of Georgia) here presents an encyclopedia with more than 1400 beautiful photographs, personal observations of over 400 species, and hundreds more cultivars anvarieties of trees,
Editorial Reviews Fshrubs, and vines that grow in the temperate zones of the Southeast. Intended as acompanion volume to Dirr's Hardy Trees and Shrubs: An Illustrated Encyclopedia, this new book will be useful to landscapers, garden designers, horticulturalists, and home gardeners located in the South, as well as the West Coast throughBritish Columbia. Dirr also includes a section on cold-hardy palms that will survive in growing zones 7-11.What sets this book apart from many other botanical encyclopedias is the author's personal writing style, whichbreathes life into the text. Each plant is described in detail, showing flower, fruit, bark, fall color, and any otherdistinguishing characteristics. Easy-to-read entries may also include the author's individual experience with theplant, recommended cultural requirements, and growing habits. This practical and comprehensivework indicates whatever unique features a plant has to offer in the garden, both aesthetically and economically. Useful appendixes aid in selection of plants by their various characteristics. Dirr's encyclopedia is strongly and unhesitatingly recommended as a basic reference resource for both public and academic libraries, especially in the relevant growing zones. Cycads superficially resemble ferns, but are a type of plant so old that dinosaurs feasted on them. Today they are widely sought for gardens, and many of the species are endangered. For horticulturalists, botanists, and general readers, the prehistory and history, distribution, cultivation, biology, propagation, and other aspects, are discussed. Highly and colorfully illustrated. Includes a glossary without pronunciation. Annotation copyright Book News, Inc.

If you find aquatic plants fascinating but aren't sure where to start, let this thorough how-to manual be your guide.
Brimming with practical insights and photographic inspirations, the Complete Guide to Water Gardening supplies step-by-step instructions for all types of water features, from full-blown oriental ponds to a simple container of
bog plants. Possibilities are only as limited as your size and budget.
Proper planning is essential to good results, and this book takes it nice and slow. Explanations are straight forward and comprehensible for folks who have some previous home improvement experience, but for a first-ever project, this may be biting off a bit more than you can chew. Leveling, backfilling, laying concrete--these are a few of the details to prepare for in adding even a small pond to your garden. You'll see your efforts pay off quickly, though.
Flourishing plants and a return of natural amphibians are a couple of rewards in sight. Plant selection involves a good understanding of this developing ecosystem, and the sections concerning options and routine maintenance are specific in the requirements of your new garden. Close-up shots of healthy plants and systems, as well as diseases and pests, will provide an excellent education. If you're looking for a new adventure in gardening and don't mind getting your feet wet, this could provide just the experience you're looking for.
